Start small – We all dream big. And more often than not, we get confused between thinking big and actually making things work. Over the years I have experienced multiple times what it felt like too big of a jump. When you simply throw yourself into an idea without any preparation. And obviously, end up failing. We refuse to start small.
One of the many reasons for our concern regarding taking small steps is that we are looking forward only for the future. We just want that big company that is making a lot of profit. Or that college degree already. Or that 10kg off. We’re never really excited about the journey to get there. Because we know the tasks ahead will be tough and will demand quite a lot of us.
So, we often get stuck wanting glory only. We skip steps and start this huge thing in order to make things faster. Most of the times, however, this will lead us to fail. Simply because there is one thing that is perhaps one of the most important things in life, planning.
Studying, planning, calculation your steps is essential to guarantee that your chances of failure are minimum. Most of the times, you will have to start small in order to avoid huge damage and to grow in a steady and consistent way.
Tip 1. Start Small
Taking small steps is a task that sort of boosts our patience. For some of us, this can be quite hard and even more tiring than consistently taking small steps in the right direction. But it is something that needs to be done. When we look at the people who are incredibly successful, we realize they all started with all they had.
Starting small gives you the opportunity to start today, giving what you have now instead of waiting for that big grand moment where you will suddenly have 100K to start your business. It teaches you to appreciate the steps and small achievements. It also minimizes the chances of errors, because it usually implies more planning.
If you are an entrepreneur, each new staff or new location matters. It’s not only about that goal of having 10 different locations. But learning to appreciate each one of them as they happen. We usually take a lot of time to start something we truly want, so we will take a lot of time for the results to come as well.

Tip 2. Avoiding damaging mistakes
You blindly invested 300K in a business that you were not sure about and it falls. All that money is gone. You start by investing 50K to your small business, if it fails, it is gone. The difference that is that the consequence of the failure is much bigger for those who don’t want to start small.
You take way too many risks and you are constantly on a do or die mode. When you could be working smarter, instead of harder. Taking small steps might give you the safety that you need to avoid any major consequences or shocks. It allows you to become wiser about each step that you have taken.
Although I’m pretty sure many of us would love to take a jump straight into the glory days, learning to appreciate our path there is even more important. It shows committed, maturity and a showcase a person who is self-aware of their limitations. For some of us even, there is simply no choice. We have to start small because we will never have the tools to simply jump right in.
This also allows you to segregate works into steps. If a step fails, we simply redo that one step instead of the whole journey. Only smart people know the value of truly taking small steps and building a castle from the bottom. Instead of just showing up to take a throne in a sketchy elevator that was built in 5 minutes.
Tip 3. Not everything is black or white
Perhaps many of us, including you and me are not mature enough to understand how things are not exactly just black and white. For most people, you either have this amazing empire, this dream life and you achieved a major goal. Or you simply are a failure. In real life, it doesn’t work like that.
We need to learn to value the importance of acknowledging that there isn’t just yes or no. Black and white. It is not as simple as either you make it big or not. The process of working on something is much more complex and it involved so much more layers.
When you take smalls steps you are basically giving yourself a chance to climb each of these layers and create something that you are proud to know so deeply. We can’t also simply ignore the fact that if one showcases such resistance in doing something for a long period of time, maybe they don’t like what they are doing at all.
Have you ever wondered why you really want to have a business but actually hates the idea of building one? Maybe, you just one to own one. And that changes everything. But perhaps this is a talk for another day. For now, we need to learn how to plan, take small steps, have patience. And eventually, gather the tools we need to get there.

Although we naturally tend to have a hard time accepting that small steps are needed, we must keep working to apply it in everything we do. There are simply way too many benefits in actually sorting out your path instead of taking a gamble. It doesn’t mean that you need to dream small, dreams have no limit. One can dream big and act smart.
