The topic discussed in this article is particularly close and very dear to my heart, considering that it took me quite a while to figure out what my own passion is. Naturally, we are curious and have a lot of questions. We are animals with the ability of thinking. Being so, we often see ourselves discussing the meaning of it all. Having to discover your purpose early on in life is considered a privilege. As well as something that is a final goal for a lot of people.
This happens because trying and failing is a normal thing. In the course of our lives, we try many different things. We work in many different jobs. We decide that we want to do many different majors.
Maybe, we might even start some of them and then give up. Change it, and try again. We do this because we want to find that one thing that makes our eyes sparkle. And finding that one thing out there can be harder than we think.
It is not hard to find stories about people who were only able to find what they really loved to do very late in their careers. Most of the times it is because they weren’t exposed to these opportunities before.
Being able to discover your purpose has a lot to do with trying. Even if you fail. It is about exposing yourself to these possibilities. And then seeing which one actually makes your heart beat faster.
1. Finding your passion
This can be hard, but not impossible. What are the things that you really love to do? Don’t think about money for a second. Just make a list of the things that you truly enjoy to do. Something that you wouldn’t mind doing for the rest of your life.
In the end, you might notice that whatever you wrote, there are possible routes to them. You can either enroll in a university or invest your money. Or maybe learning this one skill that you want.
What I mean is that everything is reachable. This means that there isn’t really something that you want to do that is impossible. Regardless of what you want to do, there is always a way. Whether it is taking a course or going to university. Even opening your own business or company. It is something that is doable.
Most of the time we hear that we must just find any job. Money is often a priority. And although money is, indeed, important. Finding ways to do what you love while also making money can be even better. And it is possible. It just takes that one small step to start.
2. Focus and prioritize
We give up too easily. That is a fact. When we are against something that we consider a challenge, our initial reaction is to run. This is a natural instinct. The goal is to protect yourself from dangerous situations. Your mind doesn’t really want to take risks.
It wants comfort. There are a series of studies related to how our minds can trick us to take the easier route available. The one that offers the least amount of stress and difficulty.
Being so, overcoming this natural habit can be quite a challenge. And it can only be done with a lot of focus and determination. You see, you don’t really need to throw everything away, quit your job and run to become an entrepreneur.
But you also won’t be successful at it if you don’t focus and work hard. Most people start by getting a side job and saving money. This requires determination and passion. And said passion will only be there if we are talking about something that we love to do.
And that is why self-awareness is so important. When we are comfortable with the route we have decided, we don’t mind going the extra miles to make it happen.

3. The Passion Test
We talked a lot about finding your passion. Because it is directly linked to finding your purpose. Being so, obviously, a lot of tools were created to try and help us find out where our heart is at.
The book, The Passion Test, a New York Times bestseller was written by Chris Attwood and Janet Attwood and it basically consists of the following. You must fill in the gaps in this sentence 15 times.
“When my life is ideal, I am__________”
Dot it 15 times. And you will basically have a mental map of your priorities in life. Your purpose will be hidden there. Most likely after doing this test, it will be very obvious.
These co-authors also run an interesting online program for finding out what your true passions are. You can find out more details here
Your life is ideal when you have money? Or when you have more freedom. When you don’t listen to other people’s orders. Or even when you have a flexible routine. Maybe when you work from home. This all creates an entrepreneur image, for example.
Being so, just by looking at the sentences you can figure it out where your purpose is. What am I here to do? Is this what I am actually good at? One thing we know for sure is that your purpose won’t make you miserable. It might be challenging. But if you are simply unhappy doing what you currently do, it means you haven’t found your real purpose in life just yet.
It might take time, and it isn’t an easy process. But we must also take joy in trying. And failing, discovering more aspects of ourselves. We also change our minds all the time. So you can try to discover your purpose. But be kind and patient with yourself in the process. Another book I love – Your hidden riches by the same authors above, analyses this concept even more broadly.
The Key Takeaway
Could we say that having to discover your purpose might be one’s biggest dream?
I think so. We are often surrounded by doubt. And although too much uncertainty can make you scared, trust the process. Expose yourself to different perspectives. Even when you wouldn’t try them at first glance.
You will only know if you try. Once you have found your purpose, everything will be okay. It will probably never be easy. But it will be fun and challenging. And will inspire you to do better and discover your hidden riches.
